Canadian prices

A grocery budget for a family in Canada

Budget Floor's lists are small on purpose. The dinner note at $10 is rice and one egg. That is one person's plate. A household should not treat $10.00 as a family shop. The prices are still useful, because several of these foods are bags that go into one pot.

The one-plate version of the same lists is Grocery budget for one person. The seven-day pattern for a single eater is Budget meal plan for a week.

The lines that can be shared

Every price below is a Canadian line stored in the tool. The rice is $2.75 both on the No Name bag at $5 and on the "900g Rice" line from $10 up. Lentils appear only on the $5 list. The other foods appear as the amount rises. See Cheap grocery list for Canada for which button holds which line.

Bag and jar foods, at the tool’s Canadian prices
ItemPrice
900g Rice$2.75
450g Dried Lentils$2.25
1kg Oats$3.25
Peanut Butter (500g)$3.75
White Bread$1.25
2kg Carrots$1.75
Bag of Onions$2.50
Veg Oil (500ml)$1.00
900g Pasta$1.75
Pasta Sauce$1.75
Frozen Spinach$2.25
Flour (1kg)$1.50
Total$25.75

That table's total, $25.75, is every one of those lines added together. You do not have to buy the whole set. It is here so a family cart can be checked with a pencil.

One shared-pot cart

This is not a button in the tool. It is one possible trip: the pot foods, without spinach and without flour, because those two are easy to leave off if the money stops. The total is only the sum of the prices next to them.

ItemPrice
900g Rice$2.75
450g Dried Lentils$2.25
1kg Oats$3.25
Peanut Butter (500g)$3.75
White Bread$1.25
2kg Carrots$1.75
Bag of Onions$2.50
Veg Oil (500ml)$1.00
900g Pasta$1.75
Pasta Sauce$1.75
Total$22.00

Not in that $22.00: the 6 eggs at $2.50 and the single can of beans at $1.50. Frozen spinach would add its own $2.25. Flour would add its own $1.50. Add the line you are actually buying. Do not add a number this page does not print.

What runs out first

The egg line is 6 large eggs for $2.50. Two people eating one egg each get three egg dinners. Four people get one egg dinner each, and two eggs are left. That is just 6 divided by the number of plates. One can of beans does not become a family protein. Lentils, 450 g for $2.25, and peanut butter, 500 g for $3.75, are the protein foods that come in a bag or a jar.

A plain way to cook it

Morning: oats, or peanut butter on bread. Evening: a pot of rice or pasta with lentils, carrots, and onion if you bought them, spinach if you bought that, and oil in the pot. Eggs on the side while they last. Sauce on the pasta if the jar is in the cart. Salt, pepper, and hot sauce only show up on the $30 list, at $1.50 and $1.00. This menu uses foods named on this page and no others.

If the cart is still too much

A household that cannot cover rice, lentils, and oats is who these directories are for. The tool's $5 note already says that amount is emergency territory in 2026.

If this shop is more than you have, use a directory. 211.ca connects you to local help, and Food Banks Canada covers the country. In Quebec, 211 Québec and the Banques alimentaires du Québec do that job.
