Cheap meals in Canada under a set amount
People search for cheap meals under $5 or under $10. In Budget Floor those amounts are whole grocery lists, not the price of one prepared plate at a counter. Here is what each cap buys, and the meals those foods become. Every price is a Canadian line from the tool.
Under $5
Two items. No Name rice at $2.75. Dried lentils at $2.25. Together $5.00.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| 900g Rice (No Name) | $2.75 |
| 450g Dried Lentils | $2.25 |
| Total | $5.00 |
The meal is rice and lentils, cooked with plenty of water. That water line is the $5 instruction. There is no egg, vegetable, oil, or sauce on this list. The tool calls anything under $5 in 2026 emergency territory. If this is the cap, use 211 as well as the pot.
If this shop is more than you have, use a directory. 211.ca connects you to local help, and Food Banks Canada covers the country. In Quebec, 211 Québec and the Banques alimentaires du Québec do that job.
Under $10
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| 900g Rice | $2.75 |
| 1kg Oats | $3.25 |
| 6 Large Eggs | $2.50 |
| Can of Beans | $1.50 |
| Total | $10.00 |
The meals named in the instructions are oats for breakfast, rice and one egg for dinner, and beans when you need protein without an egg. You are not buying a $10 plate from a hot counter. You are buying these four foods for $10.00. There are 6 eggs, so the one-egg dinner can be cooked six times. The beans are one can.
Under $15
The $10 foods, plus peanut butter at $3.75 and white bread at $1.25. The tool's total is $15.00.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Peanut Butter (500g) | $3.75 |
| White Bread | $1.25 |
| Total | $5.00 |
The new meal is peanut butter on bread. The $15 note treats that jar as the caloric floor, the food that keeps a day from being only starch. A full week of mornings and evenings from this shop is on Budget meal plan for a week.
Under $20
The list adds frozen spinach at $2.25, 2 kg of carrots at $1.75, and 500 ml of oil at $1.00. The tool's total is $20.00.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Frozen Spinach | $2.25 |
| 2kg Carrots | $1.75 |
| Veg Oil (500ml) | $1.00 |
| Total | $5.00 |
The new meal is rice with carrots and spinach cooked in that oil. That is the $20 instruction, sauté the greens into the grain, in ordinary words.
Under $25 and under $30
At $25 the list adds 900 g of pasta at $1.75, pasta sauce at $1.75, and 1 kg of flour at $1.50. The total is $25.00. The meal change is pasta with sauce, so dinner is not only rice. The flour is in the basket. The butter, sugar, and milk a baked recipe usually needs are not, so they are not part of a meal here.
At $30 the list adds a bag of onions at $2.50, salt and pepper at $1.50, and hot sauce at $1.00. The total is $30.00. The meal is the same pot, with onion in it and hot sauce at the table.
How to choose a cap
- The smallest shop that still names a morning food and an evening food with some protein is the $10 list. Read Grocery budget for one person if that plate is yours alone.
- A written week sits on Budget meal plan for a week.
- More than one person means the eggs and the single can of beans run out first. Read Grocery budget for a family before you treat $10 as a household shop.
- Every line, from $5 through $30, is on Cheap grocery list for Canada.
