A budget meal plan for a week in Canada
This is one way to cook seven mornings and seven evenings from Budget Floor's $15 Canadian list. It is not a national average, and it is not a promise that these foods ring up at $15.00 in every city. That total is the sum of the lines stored in the tool.
The shop
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| 900g Rice | $2.75 |
| 1kg Oats | $3.25 |
| 6 Large Eggs | $2.50 |
| Can of Beans | $1.50 |
| Peanut Butter (500g) | $3.75 |
| White Bread | $1.25 |
| Total | $15.00 |
In the tool this shows up as "Tier $10 Base" at $10.00, plus peanut butter and bread. The base is the rice, the oats, the 6 eggs, and the can of beans.
The pattern the list was written for
Oats in the morning. Rice and one egg in the evening. Beans when you want the protein without using an egg. Peanut butter as the food that adds calories when the plate is thin. That is the $10 and $15 instructions, said without the poster voice.
Seven days
The list has 6 eggs. This week uses one egg on six evenings. The other evening is rice and the can of beans. Two mornings are peanut butter on the bread, so breakfast is not only oats. Nothing here claims the 1 kg of oats is exactly five bowls. Portion size is not in the tool.
| Day | Morning | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Oats | Rice and 1 egg |
| 2 | Oats | Rice and 1 egg |
| 3 | Oats | Rice and the can of beans |
| 4 | Peanut butter on bread | Rice and 1 egg |
| 5 | Oats | Rice and 1 egg |
| 6 | Oats | Rice and 1 egg |
| 7 | Peanut butter on bread | Rice and 1 egg |
Count the eggs down the evening column: six times "1 egg", and one bean evening. That matches the carton on the list. It does not tell you the rice will still be in the bag on day 7. The bag is 900 g, and the scoop is yours.
If the shop can be $20
Spinach, carrots, and oil are the next three lines. They sum to $5.00, and the tool's full list becomes $20.00. The $20 note says to sauté the greens into the grain. Carrots and spinach can go into the rice on some evenings. The oil is the 500 ml bottle at $1.00.
If the shop can be $25 or $30
At $25 the list adds 900 g of pasta at $1.75, pasta sauce at $1.75, and 1 kg of flour at $1.50. The full list is $25.00. Swap rice for pasta and sauce on an evening when the pot feels repetitive. At $30 you also get onions ($2.50), salt and pepper ($1.50), and hot sauce ($1.00). The full list is $30.00. Onion goes in the pot. Hot sauce stays on the table. This page still does not invent a baking recipe around the flour.
What this week leaves out
Lunch is not in the tool's instructions. If you need a third time to eat, the foods that stretch are peanut butter on bread, rice left from the night before, or oats. A second person finishes the eggs sooner. That case is Grocery budget for a family. If $15 is more than you have, the $5 and $10 lists are on Cheap grocery list for Canada, and the meals under each cap are on Cheap meals under $10.
If this shop is more than you have, use a directory. 211.ca connects you to local help, and Food Banks Canada covers the country. In Quebec, 211 Québec and the Banques alimentaires du Québec do that job.
